Trees are a fantastic addition to gardens, however they can create issues with power lines. On private property, your access line is your responsibility, however on shared lines, such as street power lines there are height regulations.
Height Limits
SA Power has lists for which trees are allowed within prescribed buffer zones of power lines to prevent outages and fires. Anything below 2 meters is always allowed. List 1 contains species under 3m. List 2 contains species between 3 and 6m.
Typically councils or SA Power are responsible for anything requiring trimming, therefore, prior approval may be required. Especially for anything beyond the height of your lowest powerlines (4.5 – 6m). Check your council website and if approval is required, get in early with a request for next autumn.
Please view the full document from SA Power here. Further information is available on their website, see end.
Additionally, there are sewerage species and placement requirements available here or at SA Water’s website.
Always check your house plan for pipes and cables, or dial before you dig in public areas, ie. verges.
Which Species List to Use
Urban areas without bushfire risk: List 1 and 2.
Fully insulated power lines: List 1 and 2.
Bushfire risk areas require the prescribed distance be doubled, creating an additional buffer zone:
Uninsulated prescribed distance: List 1. Then a buffer distance: List 1 and 2.
Fully insulated prescribed distance: List 1 and 2. Then a buffer distance: List 1 and 2.
Underground powerlines: List 1 for 3m on both sides. DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG
Locally Native Trees for Near Powerlines
These are plants found in Adelaide adjacent IBRA regions that SA Power has listed. For further pipe information, see SA water linked above.
These are not necessarily grown by us. This list is easiest used looking at available plants first with a visit or stock list.
Heights are not filtered as anything below 2m is allowed under powerlines. Plant Selector by the Adelaide Botanic Gardens can help with heights.

Trees and Powerlines
